A generally bad set of results with the only positive (IMO) being Southampton's win. I'd like to see someone outside the usual suspects continuing a challenge.
It ain't going to be us, fo sho.

Didn't affect the result but just showed the lino giving the Spurs player offside when he was 5 yds at least in his own half.

Indeed Stevie P

That is arguably the difference between a top 8 and top 4 or 5 team though. The passing, control, movement and ability to retain possession. It is the reason BFS may have to move on in a couple more years (I assume he will get an extension and have no issue based on progress being made). Unless, as he seems to intimate, he really is flexible and with better players will get players in with better technical ability and mobility as opposed to his preference for the physical "units". Song would be a step in that direction but also dropping Nolan and getting better than Amalfitano, Jarvis in the squad too. We shall see.

Just watching Chelsea at SWANSEA, they're ripping them to pieces. The passing is outstanding

Re: Today's Football
Agree Franks, early season form from "Wily" was impressive but he is a Sam type of player. Big, strong unit with ability to drive forward or break up play. Because he is a converted CB (I believe) he is less of a technical player, ok passer no more and not a player who is buzzing about providing lots of passing options. We need him in the squad but like you say another one or two to upgrade on Nolan, Amalfitano (not quite good enough for me) and of course Jarvis (quick but thats it).

Re: Today's Football
I like Mirrales but wonder if he is one of those "hot and cold" type players who can be great in some games but struggle in others when not given the room and time? Seems a good impact sub for sure? :-)

Being honest, I have not watched him enough and what he does for the team although he is quick for sure and has great control. Certainly seems better than Amalfitano so would improve the squad. But I like Jack Cork and he is used to the possession game, mobile, good passing technique, lots of energy and movement and another player or type of player I would like to see added to our squad longer term. But, like I say, if they are not 6 foot plus and a "unit" the manager does not normally fancy them (in a professional sense) :-)

We need Kayoute back and in the form he showed at the start

Throw another engine in there with pace and good range of passing happy days

Re: Today's Football
Another "area to improve" and its again linked to midfield more than anywhere else but is more tactical and systems, is possession. Again we have improved this season so no complaints when we are moving forward but we still struggle to keep the ball and that comes from a system of pass and move, mobile, athletic, technical, energised midfield players along with lots of movement up front too. Carroll does look like he can play more of a passing game even though he will never be quick or particularly mobile but the issue in that sense is probably BFS and Mcdonald for whom this kind of possession game is alien and too indirect. Maybe not if they have better players but if we want to move forward or at least not go backwards we need IMHO to upgrade the midfield a tad or perhaps change the manager but that can wait for now as BFS again IMHO has earned another crack at the cherry. :-)

Mirallas of Everton is running down his contract. After seeing the way he performed on Tuesday I think he is worth going for.

Agree with sir alf

Probably why we have been linked with defensive mids recently it's a weak link

Sir Alf 9:15 Sat Jan 17
Re: Today's Football
BFS is correct about Southampton's defence (as a team) being as big a reason as any why they are up in the top 4. Sure they play with lots of movement and energy too in a system everyone knows their role in but they are winning by 1-0 or the odd goal a lot of the time.

Our issue is still in midfield as much as we have improved that area. With 2 strikers in a 4-3-1-2 opposed to previous season's 4-5-1 formation, we have lost some of our ability to defend as evidenced by only 4 clean sheets this season. Its better to watch now we now play 2 up front but in midfield we still need to have even more energy and movement.

Song as the holding player does not necessarily need to be as mobile(lots of movement and passing options) but the other 3 do IMHO. Not helping when Nolan plays and even Noble to some extent. Maybe all academic because the big boned man tends to favour physicality over mobility usually but a cheeky bid for Jack Cork in the Summer would be a good move along with better players than Nolan (too old / slow), Amalfitano and possibly even Noble. Not saying there is no role for Noble who is a good player but maybe not first on the team sheet longer term if we want to keep improving?

Re: Today's Football
When to Southampton stop getting lucky and get back to where they belong? Surely it is not luck now with half the season gone? Good luck to them - hope they can stay in the top 4 - make a change for another team to have a crack at the CL

Wangyama?

Re: Today's Football
Saw the last bit and they were hanging on and you'd expect that handball against Fonte to be given. 5 shots against 16 but they defend so well & make their chances count.
Excellent result without Schneiderlin & Wangyama who are probably their two key players.
